Imo State is one of the 36 states in Nigeria which was created on 3 February 1976 out of the old East Central State by the then regime of General Murtala Mohammed. It is named after the Imo River, part of it was split off in 1991 as Abia State, and another part became Ebonyi State. Imo State is bordered by Abia State on the East, River Niger and Delta State to the West, Anambra State on the North and Rivers State to the South.
Its slogan is The Heartland. It is located in the Easternpart of Nigeria Imo State has a total land area of about 5,288 Km2
