BRIEF HISTORY

Huawei Technologies Co., Ltd. was founded by Ren Zhengfei in advanced China in 1987. Initially, it resold telephone exchange equipment, but soon began to develop its own products focused on the Chinese rural market. In 1993, Huawei launched the first digital phone switch that significantly increased its domestic market share. By 1997, Huawei began its international expansion and won contracts in Hong Kong and established R & D centers in India and Sweden by the late 1990s.

From 2000 to 2010, Huawei expanded into Africa and the Middle East, aggressively targeting international markets, starting with Russia. The company formed strategic partnerships with global companies such as IBM and invested heavily in R & D, establishing centers in the United States and Europe. In 2004, Huawei entered the consumer electronics market as the first mobile phone, and by 2005 it became the third largest supplier in the world of routers and switches. Excellent partnerships included a joint venture with Symantec in 2007 and the launch of the first Android smartphone in 2009.

From 2011 to the present, Huawei has become the world’s largest manufacturer of communication equipment by 2011. The company launched its first LTE-A smartphone in 2013 and established itself in the high-end smartphone market with the Mate and P series, making significant advances in mobile technology. In 2018, Huawei led the global communications equipment market and invested heavily in 5G technology, launching its first 5G smartphone in 2019.

However, Huawei has faced considerable political and legal challenges since 2019. The U.S. government has imposed trade restrictions on Huawei, citing national security concerns that restrict Huawei’s access to the U.S. Despite these obstacles, Huawei has led the way and continues to innovate in the 5G market. The company’s history reflects dynamic growth, strategic innovation and resilience in the face of significant global challenges.
