Benue state is one of the 36 states in Nigeria derives its name from the River Benue which was created on 3 February 1976, It was one of the seven new states created by the military administration headed by late General Murtala Mohammed, which increased the number of states in the federation from twelve to nineteen. It is located in the Northcentral part of Nigeria. It is popularly called the “Food Basket of the Nation” as a result of its competitive advantage in agriculture.
The state borders Nasarawa State to the North, Taraba State to the East, Cross River State to the South, Enugu State to the South West and Kogi to the West. It also shares an international boundary with the Republic of Cameroon to the South East.
Benue State has a total land area of about 30,800 Km2. The Capital is Makurdi
There are 23 Local Government Areas in Benue state namely: Ado, Agatu, Apa, Buruku, Gboko, Guma, Gwer, Gwer-West, Katsina-Ala, Konshisha, Kwande, Logo, Makurdi, Obi, Ogbadibo, Ohimini, Oju, Okpokwu, Otukpo, Tarka, Ukum, Ushongo, Vandeikya.
The major crops in Benue state are Yams, Rice, Beans, Cassava, Potatoes, Maize, Soya Beans, Sorghum, Millet, Cocoyam, Sesame, Melon, Groundnut, and Tomato.
Benue has some Solid minerals such as Kaolin, Limestone, Barytes, Gemstone, Gypsum, Feldspar, Wolframite.
